E-bikes have gone from niche to mainstream, but as the technology matures, riders are starting to ask for more than just a motor and a battery. We’re looking for smarter, safer, and more rider-focused design.
As we coast into 2026, here are the 8 crucial features that we believe need to become standard in the next generation of electric bicycles. E-bike companies, take note—this is your 2026 feature roadmap!
1. Torque vs. Cadence: Let the Rider Choose!
Every rider has a preference. Cadence sensors are simple and kick in as long as the pedals are turning. Torque sensors are sophisticated, measuring how hard you’re actually pedaling for a more natural, responsive feel.
- The Wish: Why can’t we have both? We want switchability options to easily toggle between a relaxed cadence-based ride and a more performance-oriented torque feel. This would allow a commuter to switch to cadence for an easy, no-sweat ride and then switch to torque for a weekend workout.
2. 👋 Detachable Displays: Say Goodbye to Theft Bait
Your display is the nerve center of your e-bike, but a bright, expensive screen glued to the handlebars is a magnet for thieves.
- The Wish: Detachable displays must become the norm. Models like those from Bosch’s Kiox series already offer this, turning the display into an anti-theft key and making it easy to pop into your pocket. This not only secures your bike but also protects the electronics from weather and sun.
3. Bigger is Better: The 24×4 Fat Tire Sweet Spot
Most fat-tire bikes default to 20×4 or 26×4. But for a lot of riders, the jump from a smaller folder to a larger bike is a leap.
- The Wish: We need more ebikes with 24×4 fat tires! This size offers the superior stability and shock absorption of a fat tire, but in a slightly more nimble package than the 26-inch, perfect for urban riders who still want to tackle curbs, gravel paths, and a little snow.
4. Visibility is Safety: Standardized Turn Signals
Hand signals are great, but in heavy traffic, a lit signal is clearer, safer, and less distracting.
- The Wish: Every e-bike should come with integrated front and back turn signals as a standard feature. This is a basic safety requirement that should be mandated on all e-bikes, just like headlights and brake lights.
5. Peace of Mind: Integrated Anti-Theft Protection
E-bikes are an investment, and bike theft is an epidemic. We love seeing companies like Aventon and Velotric start to tackle this, but it needs to be an industry-wide commitment.
- The Wish:Built-in anti-theft features are non-negotiable. This means a dual system:
- Physical Locking: Integrated wheel locks (like a café lock) that can immobilize the bike.
- GPS Tracking: Discreet, hardwired GPS/cellular tracking with a companion app (like Apple AirTag or Tile functionality, but built-in) for real-time recovery.
What do you think of this wishlist? Which feature would you move to the top of the list?
