I’ve been working on customizing my Lectric Xpress 2, a $1,400 city and commuter e-bike. At this price point, it comes with great out-of-the-box value—including free fenders, a rack, a suspension seat post, and a lock. However, I wanted to swap out a few stock components to improve the overall comfort, ergonomics, and aesthetic.
The Modifications
- Air-Inflatable Saddle & Seat Post: I installed a RockBros air-inflatable saddle using a 14mm wrench onto the pre-installed suspension seat post. The seat features a built-in pump and air-release valve to adjust softness, and its green accents match the pine green frame nicely.
- Upgraded Handlebars: I replaced the stock handlebars with a wider set from Bucklos featuring a 90mm rise, 13-degree backsweep, and 5% upsweep. Reinstalling the brake levers, shifter, display, and grips went smoothly since the stock wiring had enough slack to fit the wider stance.
- Accessories & Clean-Up: I stripped off several warning and brand stickers from the front fork using a heat gun to give the bike a cleaner, sleeker look. To complete the cockpit, I added a carbon fiber-style bottle cage, an Electric water bottle, a left-side mirror, a phone mount, a bell, and a rear rack bag with drop-down panniers.

First Ride Impressions
Taking the bike out for a spin after three days of rain, the upgraded handlebars were an instant win—the extra width and reach created a much better ergonomic position. The rear hub motor on the Express 2 is exceptionally quiet compared to the original model. Unlocked to Class 3 speeds, I comfortably hit 28 mph on a top-speed run in turbo mode. Overall, spending a couple hundred extra dollars on these custom tweaks turned a solid $1,400 e-bike into an ideal rail-trail cruiser.
